Explorer Editions

The Explorer Editions are special, small-group photography adventures that offer early access to locations I’ve carefully researched but haven’t yet led as a fully-developed workshop. These immersive trips include everything you’d expect from one of my workshops: plenty of wildlife photography, in-the-field instruction, and creative guidance, but with the added experience of seeing how I scout new destinations, solve real-time challenges, and shape future trips from the ground up.

If you’re curious, flexible, and love the idea of getting in early, this is your invitation. You’ll explore wild, visually rich places before they appear on my main workshop calendar, and you’ll do so at a lower cost than standard workshops—while still receiving the full benefit of traveling and learning alongside me.

HUNGARY: BIRDS OF THE HORTOBÁGY STEPPE

Departure: Late May - Early June 2026

The Hortobágy steppe is legendary in bird photography and circles. Imagine dawn light breaking over wetlands, and you’re in a photo hide (blind) designed specifically to put you at eye-level with nesting Hoopoes, bitterns, herons, Eurasian spoonbills, egrets, storks, cranes, bee-eaters, Little owls, and so much more.

Hungary has invested in world-class hides — in-ground, aquatic, and built into the tree canopy — and the result is an immersive experience where patience and preparation lead to extraordinary frames. Hoopoes flying in and out of their nesting boxes, breeding Red-footed falcons duking it out for the best nesting spots, and pygmy cormorants swimming through a gorgeous canvas of yellow floating heart vegetation. Truly next-level access for anyone who loves bird photography!

Birds of Newfoundland: Puffins, Northern Gannets, and Seabirds of the Northern AtlantiC

Departure: Late June - Early July 2026

Few wildlife spectacles rival the cliffs of Newfoundland in summer, when Atlantic puffins return to their burrows and Northern gannets soar in vast numbers over the sea and settle into the cliffs. These colonies are among the largest in North America, and the opportunity to photograph them against dramatic coastlines is unmatched.

Other seabirds like Common murres, Bridled murres, Black guillemot, Black-legged kittiwakes, and more will also find their way in front of our lenses. While it’s centered around the avian life, we’ll also head out on a chartered boat to photograph whales as they swim through the icebergs that have floated down from Greenland in search of a meal.

THE FINAL FEAST: BROWN BEARS IN AUTUMNAL ALASKA

Departure: Early September 2026

I’ve photographed coastal brown bears all over Alaska, but this one will be something new: a lodge-based adventure with daily fly-outs to hidden bear locations known mostly to locals.

By timing it with the tail end of the salmon runs and the first hints of fall color, we’ll photograph coastal brown bears in a season few ever see them — thick, textured coats, healthy with the extra weight from hyperphagia and the abundance of salmon, and a quieter rhythm as they prepare for winter. It’s an intimate look at a familiar species across a handful of locations that change every day.

This workshop offers extraordinary access to remote bear-viewing locations, flown in daily by bush plane, with golden light, fewer crowds, and dramatic behavior at its peak. It’s a rare chance to photograph these powerful animals in intimate, wild moments framed by the quiet beauty of a changing season.
