There's a place in the middle of the United States often referred to as "flyover country." A derisive way to categorize places that many feel offer nothing, or are boring, I grew in flyover country and it's one of the most beautiful regions of the country I know.

Reading Willa Cather only solidified my love of the plain(s) states, driving home their importance outside of the obvious. I think this eared grebe, photographed in the Dakotas from inside my floating blind, would agree, too. Though merely a stopover for breeding season, this area provides her with a place to raise her young every year, giving us more to appreciate about this area than meets the eye.
